What is BBT? That is the question I get asked quite frequently. BBT stands for Basal Body Temperature. It is the body’s resting temperature and is measured first thing in the morning, as soon as you open your eyes and before you do anything, including sitting up or getting out of bed! Even these slight movements can make your temp reading invalid.
Why would I take my BBT every morning? Your BBT and the corresponding chart can actually tell you many things about your health. High pre-ovulation temps can indicate elevated follicle-stimulating hormone, poor ovarian reserve, and poor responders for IVF and ovarian stimulation and can also be an indicator of Polycistic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Low post-ovulation can indicate low progesterone levels and a higher probability of miscarriage.
Does BBT tracking tell me when I ovulate? Your BBT chart will show a temperature spike within 24 hours AFTER you ovulate. So you do have to track for multiple cycles before you can accurately predict ovulation using BBT. Tracking your BBT daily will show when and IF you ovulated (notice past tense). You don’t have to ovulate to have a period! If, for example, you are under extreme stress, your body may have to try multiple times before/if it succeeds in ovulating. Your BBT will reflect this. A cycle is called anovulatory if ovulation has failed.
